Why Exfoliation is Important: What to do about Itchy Armpits

At Cher-Mere we LOVE exfoliation because it’s what makes your skin feel silky smooth.   Your skin naturally sheds skin cells every month.  When a new skin layer forms it’s important to exfoliate so you don’t get any dry patches.

Exfoliating is a process that helps remove those dead skin cells from the surface of your skin.  You can exfoliate your skin in multiple ways!

  1. An exfoliating tool: a pumice, gloves, and loofah
  2. Granular exfoliating product: try our Cher-Mere Amazing Body Scrub

How often should you exfoliate?

Cher-Mere recommends exfoliating two to three times a week.  While it’s important to eliminate dead skin cells, you don’t want to strip your skin of its natural oils. Sticking to a schedule of two to three times a week will keep up with skin regeneration without removing all the good stuff.

How to exfoliate the skin?

Be gentle!  You’re not trying to get a stain out but encourage the regeneration of skin cells to get that smooth soft skin we all love.  When using a scrub be sure to wet the skin before applying, a good time to exfoliate is in the shower!  After your shower remember to moisturize.  When using an exfoliating pair of gloves, pumice or loofah (body puff).  Use circular motions over the area you wish to exfoliate.  Once again be sure to apply a moisturizer after.

What are the benefits of exfoliating?

The prime benefit of exfoliating is getting rid of dead skin cells, it can also help with imperfections on the face.

  • Minimize blemishes and breakouts
  • Improve skin hydration
  • Reduce redness
  • Anti aging
  • Stimulates blood flow
  • Wear sun screen!!

What if I get itchy?

Sometimes you’ll notice that areas you have removed hair from get itchy.  There can be several different reasons for the cause of the itchiness so let’s go over the potential culprits!

  • Contact dermatitis: "is when the skin becomes irritated and inflamed after contact with an allergen or an irritant. There are two types of contact dermatitis—allergic or irritant".
    • Redness, itchiness, small bumps
  • Folliculitis: is the inflammation of the hair follicle.
    • Itch, pain, red bumps around hair follicle, pus
  • Ingrown hairs: occurs when the hair grows back into the skin.
    • Itch, pain, red bump around hair follicle, hair curled under skin
  • Psoriasis: "is an autoimmune disorder that causes the body to attack its own skin cells".
    • Itch, pink or red rash, defined border on rash, scaly
  • Yeast infection: “that grows in warm and moist environments like the armpit”.
    • Itch, foul order, redness

Most of these can be remedied at home, however please contact a doctor if your conditions worsen.

At home:

  • Try switching deodorants, body soaps, laundry detergent, moisturizer.  Some products could cause an allergic reaction.
  • Use fragrance free products.
  • Stop hair removal until the symptoms go away.
  • Try over the counter hydrocortisone cream to soothe the area.
