This year Cher-Mere will not be celebrating Canada day. Due to the recent discoveries of mass graves at residential schools across Canada we feel that it would be inappropriate and disrespectful to celebrate. Genocide of Indigenous peoples, and children are big a part of Canada's past, it is no surprise that they are discovering multiple grave sites to this day. As such, we strongly encourage you to consider reflecting on Canada's past and what you can do for the future of Indigenous peoples. Now more than ever we need to listen Indigenous voices, educate our selves and advocate. We are very thankful to live and work in Canada it is a great place, however it is not perfect. To celebrate Canada day is to ignore the fact that Residential and Day schools still impact Indigenous peoples. It celebrates the colonization and oppression of the original owners of this land. Take Canada day as a day of reflection and mourning for the lost lives. Wear orange to stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples.
