Black History and Futures Month invites us not only to reflect on the past, but to actively shape the future. At Cher-Mère, this month holds special meaning. Our brand was born from Caribbean heritage, intergenerational wisdom, community care, and science-supported natural wellness. We stand on a legacy of resilience, entrepreneurship, and knowledge and we honour that every day through the work we do.
Recognizing Black history is not only about remembrance, it is about responsibility. When we understand the stories that built our communities, we gain the power to write new ones rooted in belonging, dignity, and opportunity.
Representation plays a powerful role in that future. Public art, storytelling, and visibility help people see themselves reflected in spaces of value and contribution. Here in Kingston, the mural at 68 Brock Street honouring Judith Brown is one such example, a reminder that whose stories we tell matters.
Kingston’s Black history is both inspiring and sobering. Black entrepreneurs James and Marie Elder operated the Oregon Salon in the 19th century, building business and presence despite systemic barriers. Robert Sutherland , the first known Black graduate of Queen's University made a financial gift that helped save the university. We also acknowledge the historic exclusion of Black students from Queen’s medical school in the early 1900s, truths that must be remembered as we continue working toward equity in education and professional spaces.
Honouring this history means taking action, not only during one month, but throughout the year.

At Cher-Mère, wellness is more than products and services. It is history, identity, community, and care in action. Legacy is not only what we inherit, it is what we choose to continue and build forward together.
Rooted in care. Inspired by community. Focused on the future - all year long. 🤎
