For years, natural skincare has often been marketed as the gentler alternative to “clinical” skincare as though we have to choose between ingredients inspired by nature and products that actually deliver results.

At Cher-Mère, we don’t believe natural skincare has to be one or the other.

Our approach to natural skincare combines thoughtfully selected ingredients with formulation, testing and an understanding of skin science. Because whether an ingredient comes from a plant, a laboratory or somewhere in between, what matters is what it does, how it is formulated, and how your skin responds to it.

Natural Doesn't Automatically Mean Better

One of the biggest misconceptions in skincare is that “natural” automatically means safe, gentle or effective.

It doesn't.

Poison ivy is natural. So are many substances that can irritate the skin. At the same time, an ingredient with a scientific-sounding name isn't automatically harsh or harmful.

Instead of focusing solely on whether an ingredient is natural, we should be asking better questions:

Why is this ingredient in the formula? What does it do for the skin? At what concentration is it effective? How do the ingredients work together? And has the finished product been appropriately tested?

That is where natural skincare and skin science should meet.

Ingredients With a Purpose

A good skincare formula isn't about packing a label with as many trendy ingredients as possible. Every ingredient should have a reason for being there.

For example, squalene is a lipid naturally found in our skin's sebum and helps support softness and moisture. As we age, changes in our skin's natural oils can contribute to dryness, which is why lipid-supporting ingredients can be valuable additions to skincare and the skins natural barrier. 

Vitamin E is another ingredient commonly used in skincare for its antioxidant and moisturizing properties. It can help support the skin barrier while protecting against oxidative stress.

Hyaluronic acid is valued for its ability to attract and retain water, helping skin appear hydrated and plump.

Botanical ingredients such as Aloe Vera can provide soothing and hydrating benefits, while other plant-derived oils, extracts and antioxidants can be incorporated for specific skin needs.

The important part isn't simply being able to put these ingredients on the front of a bottle. It is understanding why they are there and how they contribute to the overall formulation. Natural Skincare Still Requires Testing

This is an important distinction for us.

Creating natural skincare is not simply mixing appealing ingredients together and putting them into a jar. Products need to be formulated with consideration for stability, preservation, compatibility and safety.

Water-containing skincare products, for example, require appropriate preservation because bacteria, yeast and mould are also “natural” and we certainly don't want them growing in your moisturizer.

Testing matters.

Formulation matters.

Concentration matters.

And the way ingredients interact with one another matters.

This is why we believe conversations about clean or natural skincare should go beyond lists of ingredients we have been told to avoid. A product should be judged by the quality and purpose of its formulation, not by fear of an ingredients name.

Where Nature Meets Skin Science

Cher-Mère has always been rooted in Caribbean botanicals and ingredients, but our philosophy is also grounded in science.

That combination matters to us.

We can appreciate ingredients traditionally used to care for the skin while also applying what we now understand about the skin barrier, hydration, antioxidants, exfoliation and aging.

Modern natural skincare doesn't need to reject science. In fact, science helps us understand why some naturally derived ingredients work, how best to formulate with them, and when another ingredient may be a better choice.

“Clean” Shouldn't Mean Fear-Based Skincare

The word clean has become one of the biggest buzzwords in the beauty industry, but there is no single universal definition of what makes a cosmetic “clean.”

For us, clean skincare is less about creating fear around certain ingredients and more about being thoughtful about what we formulate and why.

We want effective ingredients. We want products that feel beautiful on the skin. We want formulations suited to their intended purpose. And we want clients to understand what they are putting on their skin rather than simply being told that one ingredient is “good” and another is “bad.”

Because skincare is chemistry even when the ingredients begin in nature.

Natural Skincare That Actually Has to Perform

Ultimately, beautiful packaging and a good ingredient story aren't enough.

Skincare has a job to do.

Depending on the product and your skin, that might mean supporting hydration, improving the feel of dry skin, maintaining the skin barrier, providing antioxidant support or addressing the appearance of specific skin concerns.

That is also why there is no single “best” natural skincare routine for everyone. Your age, skin type, environment, lifestyle and individual concerns all matter.

Because the future of natural skincare shouldn't be about nature versus science.

It should be about using both intelligently.
